  8. the discussion about gravity bongs, how they work, and how to make them...

  12. THE GRAVITY BONG:
  13.  
  14.     I am a senior mechanical engineering student.  My specialty is 
  15. design and prototyping.  I have worked for several companies 
  16. learning how to prototype, and this comes in really handy for some 
  17. of my "other" projects.  Here is a pretty simple one...
  18.  
  19.     I was introduced to the gravity bong by a friend.  He told me 
  20. the full name as described to him was the "Afghanistan Gravity 
  21. Bong".  We were sitting around one night and decided to try one 
  22. out.
  23.  
  24.     While I could go into detail concerning the mechanics of the 
  25. bong's operation, I don't think that is really necessary.  The 
  26. reason it is called a "gravity bong" and not something else is 
  27. this is what someone called it, that is how they described it to 
  28. their friends, and now it is an accepted term for the following 
  29. setup.  I have observed some people on the net arguing about 
  30. gravity vs. pressure vs. whatever.  If you have comments like this 
  31. as a result of this description, I refer you to: 
  32. alt.engineering.geeks.  The type of argument I have observed would 
  33. have been halted a long time ago by declaring a "TECH TIME OUT !!" 
  34. at our school.  Take a hit man.  I feel better now having said all 
  35. that, so... on with the important stuff...

  38. GRAVITY BONG OPERATION:
  39.  
  40. STEP 1:
  41.     Place the bottomless bottle into a water source such as a 
  42. bucket of water, sink, bathtub, larger bottle, fishtank (just 
  43. kidding), etc...When the bottle rests on the bottom, the mouth 
  44. piece should be above the water level enough to grip the bottle.  
  45. I'm not sure if warm or cold water is best, or even if it makes 
  46. much difference seeing as the smoke is not bubbled through it.

  48. STEP 2:
  49.     Pack the bowl and place it on the mouth of the bottle.
  50.  
  51. STEP 3:
  52.     SLOWLY!! draw the bottle out of the water, while lighting the 
  53. bowl.  The herb should really burn and the smoke will look 
  54. intimidating.  Stop when: a)the herb is all ash (preferable), or 
  55. b)when the bottom of the bottle is still an inch or so below the 
  56. water level in the bucket.  Begin preparing yourself for a huge 
  57. hit.

  59. STEP 4:
  60.     CAREFULLY remove the bowl without letting the bottle move 
  61. downward (up a little is o.k., but don't lwt the bottom come out 
  62. of the water), exhale deeply, and place your mouth over the 
  63. opening.  Inhale quickly and completely, allowing your head to 
  64. move downward.  Try not to drink any bong water as this kind of 
  65. sucks! (although its like learning to swim, it's bound to happen a 
  66. little).

  69.     Don't cough and hang on tight!

  112. THE DESIGN:

  114. FIRST TRIAL:
  115.     First, a 2-liter bottle and a suitable bucket were obtained 
  116. from the apartment.  I cut the bottom off the 2-liter bottle and 
  117. set it aside.  I was able to find a couple of screw on caps, one 
  118. of which was of the metal variety.  I cut a rough hole in each, 
  119. and glued them together, with the cup sides facing out.  Into the 
  120. side with the metal cap, a piece of screen was placed and fit real 
  121. nice.  We were forced to build this little thing because we didn't 
  122. have a bowl handy.
  123.     This worked o.k., but quite a bit of air flowed in for the 
  124. quantity of herb which was consumed.  Also, it was a pain to 
  125. unscrew the cap after lifting the bottle.  Overall, we all ended 
  126. up having a great time and the first trial was still a success.  I 
  127. leave this historical description in here because: a)this may be a 
  128. good enough system for you, or b)you are also in a pinch for 
  129. something right away as we were!

  131. SECOND TRIAL:
  132.     Having decided the activity was fun enough to warrant further 
  133. development of the gravity bong, and having access to a machine 
  134. shop, I designed a bowl just for this purpose.  This incorporates 
  135. a nice sized burn chamber (approximately = to 5 bat hits from a 
  136. small bat), a small screen, and an o-ring seal to prevent air from 
  137. passing anything but the burning herb.  It drops out a pretty 
  138. hefty ash after each hit.

  152.     You could make the dimensions to whatever you think may work 
  153. best.  I put a 1/4 in. hole through the bowl, with a 3/8 dia. burn 
  154. chamber that is .400 in. deep.  It fits nicely inside a 35mm film 
  155. canister for storage and TRANSPORTATION to parties (no plans to 
  156. build more, though several friends have already tried begging!).
  157.     This new bowl works very well and burns quite efficienty, 
  158. filling the bottle with dense smoke.  The only change I have made 
  159. to the apparatus is to offer the option of a milk jug in place of 
  160. the 2-liter bottle, with a plastic adapter atached to the jug 
  161. which makes the mouth the same size as a 2-liter bottle.  
  162.     I built my setup some time ago, but the other day someone on 
  163. the net mentioned using a tuba mouthpiece.  Not a bad idea.  Also, 
  164. people have said they used aluminum foil with holes poked in it.  
  165. The point is to get a lot of burning done without using an overly 
  166. large volume of air.

  168. TRIAL THREE:
  169.     This has not been done yet, but the plan is to design a multi-
  170. user setup using a larger water bottle (like the Poland Springs).

  172. TIPS:
  173.  
  174. To get really wacked, breath back into the bottle, allowing it to 
  175. rise back up to the beginning of step 4, and inhale again.  Do not 
  176. however, deprive yourself of too much oxygen.  I used this method 
  177. and took a full minute to take the hit, breathing in and out, and 
  178. was immediately wacked, staying that way for several hours from 
  179. one hit!

  181. Have a "Gravity Party" with many friends - lotso fun!
  182.  
  183. Some people like to push the bottle to the bottom, and then 
  184. inhale.  While this does act to push the smoke into your lungs 
  185. (kind of like breathing in a balloon), I don't really feel it is 
  186. any faster.  If you try this, don't displace so much water that 
  187. the bucket overflows.
  188.  
  189. If it is your first time trying the system, do some trial runs 
  190. without packing the bowl and lighting it.  This is a must for a 
  191. first time user from the point of view of risk reduction (won't 
  192. chance losing precious smoke).
